There is something beautiful about being a therapist. We hold space, listen deeply, offer care, and in doing so, we witness transformation in others. But what happens when we forget to witness ourselves?

Burnout does not arrive all at once. It tends to creep in slowly, disguised as fatigue, disinterest, or that nagging sense that you are simply going through the motions. You might still show up, still smile, still do your work. But underneath, something feels dulled, depleted, and unwell.

Having walked this path myself, and supported countless others through it, I can say this: burnout is not a sign of weakness. It is a call to pause, to soften, and to come back to yourself. Below are techniques and insights I have found most supportive for therapists navigating the tender terrain of burnout recovery. These are equally helpful for clients, and anyone who gives more than they receive.

Recognising Burnout in the Body and Mind

Before healing can begin, we must name what is happening. Burnout is not just about tiredness. It may look like:

  • Emotional detachment or irritability
  • Dread before sessions or workdays
  • Difficulty sleeping or feeling rested
  • Physical tension, especially in the shoulders, jaw, and lower back
  • A loss of meaning or joy in things that once inspired you

The body often speaks first. Pay attention to what it is saying.

Breathwork for Regulation and Reset

Breathing is something we do all the time, yet when we become intentional with it, breath becomes medicine. When I was moving through my own burnout, I found simple breathwork practices profoundly grounding. One of my favourites involves extending the exhale to signal safety to the nervous system.

Try this: Inhale for four counts, exhale for six. Repeat for a few minutes while seated or lying down. No force. Just rhythm. Let the breath remind your body it is safe to let go.

For a deeper journey, our Breathwork Journey Course offers accessible, transformative practices that help shift stuck energy and promote calm resilience.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Burnout often brings unresolved emotions to the surface. Guilt, resentment, sadness, or simply a sense of being overwhelmed. EFT, or tapping, is a gentle method for processing these emotions through specific acupressure points.

It can be done almost anywhere, and therapists often find it a useful self-help tool between sessions. Our EFT Course is designed for both personal use and for integrating into your work with clients. It is simple, effective, and deeply relieving when practiced with honesty and care.

Restorative Massage and Touch

Just as we offer massage to others, it is essential that we allow ourselves to receive it too. Receiving massage is not a luxury. It is a reset. Safe, nurturing touch calms the nervous system, eases physical holding patterns, and invites us back into our bodies with kindness.

For those trained in massage, swapping treatments with a trusted colleague can be incredibly nourishing. And if you feel the call to expand your skills or explore new modalities, our Massage Training Courses provide a rich space for growth and reconnection with your practice.

Journaling as a Window to the Self

Sometimes we are too busy to even realise what we are feeling. Journaling creates space to listen to yourself. It can be as simple as writing one page each morning, or a short reflection at the end of the day.

Try prompts like:

  • What do I need today?
  • Where am I giving too much?
  • What would rest feel like for me?

There is no need for eloquence. Just honesty. Journaling helps you reclaim your inner voice — the one that always knows what you need.

Yoga Nidra and Deep Rest

When burnout is full blown, active practices can feel like too much. Yoga Nidra is a practice of conscious rest that invites deep healing without any movement at all. It can be practiced lying down, guided by voice or recording, and is known to calm the mind and release stored tension from the body.

It is one of the most restorative tools I know. If you are unfamiliar, our Yoga Nidra Course offers guided practices that gently support mental clarity and emotional balance.

For those ready to rebuild energy over time, the 12 Week Online Yoga Series provides a beautiful structure to restore vitality with slow, intentional movement and reflection.

Meditation and Mental Clarity

Often, burnout clouds our sense of direction. Meditation helps clear the fog. Even five minutes a day can help reconnect with inner stillness. It is not about emptying the mind, but about noticing, witnessing, and softening our grip on constant doing.

Our Meditation Course is designed with both beginners and experienced practitioners in mind. It is a safe, structured way to build your own practice, and reconnect with what matters most.

Mental Health Awareness and Self Compassion

Understanding your own mental health is just as important as supporting others. Our Mental Health Awareness Course offers essential insights into emotional wellbeing and practical ways to maintain balance. It is particularly useful for therapists looking to deepen self-awareness while supporting clients more effectively.

Reclaiming Your Vitality

Burnout is not the end. It is a signpost, a redirection, and an invitation to slow down. When you honour its message, healing becomes possible. This is not about fixing yourself. It is about remembering your needs, your limits, and your worth.

Whether you are a massage therapist, yoga teacher, or wellness practitioner, your wellbeing matters. You cannot pour from an empty cup. With the right tools, time, and support, you can find your way back to vitality — not by pushing, but by softening.

Let these tools support you as you return to yourself. And when you are ready, we are here to walk with you through your journey with courses, community, and care.
